Today is the 34th anniversary of the death of foremost Northern Reformer and progressive politician, Malam Aminu Kano.
In such a time when calls for Northern Reformation are being met with hostility and lies from questionable characters on the far right, the reformist ideas of Malam are more relevant than ever.
Malam, as he is fondly called fought for the abolishment of the Cattle Tax, Jangali and Haraji which many APC governors are now trying to reinstate.
He fought for women rights at a time when doing so was seen as Taboo. If he where alive, Malam Aminu Kano would have been castigated and declared a Kafir by many of the conservatively inclined youths walking the streets of Northern Nigeria.
But his ideas of Democratic Humanism continue to live on in a few who shoulder the responsibility of social reform and seeing to social justice. Allah ya jikan Malam!
May his memory be a blessing!
