Despite the current economic down turn, more than 40,000 Nigerian pilgrims performed the lesser Hajj or Umra this Ramadan season. With each of them required to spend not less than N700,000, the total bill of the religious ritual amounted to an estimated N28 Billion.
Most of this staggering amount of money will go to foreign airlines and other Saudi business, while recession gripped Nigeria continues to grapple with high inflation and low human development indices.
While industry and other sectors of economy continue to suffer, religious organisations have witnessed a boom. priests continue to live a flamboyant lifestyle and numerous state governments who are having it hard to pay every day salaries have somehow found ways to sponsor multi million naira Ramadan feeding projects.
