“Renaming the prestigious Northwest University, Kano, which was initiated by the immediate past governor of Kano State and now a senator, Engr. Dr Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, into Maitama Sule University, by the present administration, is completely wrong and un-academic.” these were the words republished by Adnan Tudun Wada, the student leader who reported;y organised a protest against the ill conceived renaming of the university to “Yusuf Maitama Sule University”.
But after honouring an invitation by the Kano office of the State Security Service, Adnan took to social media and unceremoniously backed out, saying ” Northwest University is Maitama Sule University, Kano. We should accept this in good faith.” he even ended the long monotony with an apologetic chant “Long Live Maitama Sule University!”
So the question on the minds of many citizens of Kano is, who actually scared off Adnan Mukhtar Tudun Wada? Perhaps it was true that he never was part of any planned protest as he later claimed, perhaps its true that he only “honoured and invitation” but what is also a fact is that he had a radical change of opinion after meeting the Director of Kano SSS and “two other assistant directors”
But given the history of Nigeria’s security services, who can honestly blame a poor student activist like Adnan? chances are had he not recanted, he would have suffered not by spending an untold number of nights in a dehumanizing Nigerian detention cell, but also with a uncermonious rustication from the state-owned university. Those blaming poor Adnan probably know this, a young man should not be forced into the brave line of fire, such an act is reserved to men and women who are ready to martyr themselves for this holy federal republic of Nigeria and its young democracy which has so far been battered beyond recognition by a totalitarian government.
