OPINION- The renaming of North West University to Yusuf Maitama Sule, Matters Arising

– Ahmed Abdullahi Sumaila
I have over the few days seen the shouting match especially within the social media on the merits and demerits of renaming the North West University.
Yusuf Maitama Sule in my own opinion belongs to all political parties in Kano. The reason is that he was a student of Mallam Aminu Kano during his school days and infact was the person that gave the name to the first political party in the Northern Region of Nigeria, the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), where Mallam Aminu Kano was to become its President later, but as he said he could not withstand the problems and sufferings associated with being a member of NEPU and decided to pitch his tent with the Northern People’s Congress (NPC).
I had earlier during the early years of the administration of Governor Ganduje in one of my writings mentioned that his cabinet cannot be compared with the administration of progressive governors such as Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi. It is not the governor only that makes a government effective rather it’s the people around him.
The idea of having a University in Kano did not start with Kwankwaso and Ganduje. Alhaji Sani Marshall of blessed memory intended to build a University in Kano he got a large parcel of land in Kura to do that but due to various obstacles placed on him at that period he could not one should remember that Alhaji Sani Marshall is a Member of the NEPU and PRP Tabo Faction.
In the third republic Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya also attempted to have the University in Bagauda but academic activities could not start I believe due to lack of enough funds facing the government.
The dream was to come true when Mohammed Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso became the Governor of Kano, in his first tenure he established Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil while he established North West University in his second coming.
In establishing a University and naming it there are certain procedures required by the law. The first is that there must be a law backing it; hence the first thing is for the Kano State House of Assembly to amend the law establishing the North West University and renaming it Yusuf Maitama Sule University. I know that my brother Barrister Falali is the Attorney General of the State and apart from him we have Barrister Zubaida in the Executive Council of the State. I expected the learned people among the State Cabinet to guide the Governor and the rest of the members when this type of issues arise in Council meetings.
Different governments before the government of Ganduje have committed this type of blunders and it seems it has now become a recurring decimal in Kano.
When Shekarau was in power he appointed Umar Faruk Usman as a Permanent Secretary to head the State Television Corporation whereas the law establishing the Corporation provided for the post of Managing Director. He was called Permanent Secretary/CEO of the Television without amending the law.
Kwankwaso during his first tenure one day called my father who was the Chairman Board of Directors of CTV 67/ 48 to tell him that he was changing the name of CTV 67/48 to STV 67/48 without the State House of Assembly changing the law establishing it.
The Governments of Kwankwaso, Shekarau and Ganduje are all guilty of one thing playing politics with the naming of infrastructures in the State.
I hold this opinion but with all humility and respect to them because they are all family friends to my family as such in the Fulani Culture my Uncles. I was born to see them as part of my family I do not know when and how they met my parents.
In view of the foregoing I believe that just because of my closeness to them I should not be quiet and not tell the truth on this issue. There is a need for re-orientation of most present crop of civil servants and political appointees we have in the State.
There was a time we had a Kano State Students week at Bayero University Kano during my under graduate days , the Danmasani of Kano and my late father spoke to us at that occasion. Ahmad Umar Abubakar was the Chairman of the University Chapter of K.S.A. and Zulkifil Ahmad Rufai was the Secretary-General they took over from me as the Chairman of the Chapter. In that occasion the Danmasani told us that when Shehu Usman Danfodio was praying to the first Fulani Emir of Kano from the Mundubawa Clan, Suleiman he prayed to him saying ‘Allah ya rabaka da munafincin mutanen Kano’ he further told us that it was they in the NPN that prevented Mallam Aminu Kano from being President during the second republic he had to decamp to P.R.P. he also told us that it was from Kano a plan was orchestrated to prevent him (Maitama Sule) from becoming the President in N.P.N. during the second republic at the end he told us “Kada Ku yi yada mukayi”. It seems uptill now that pull down syndrome, hypocrisy and envy has refused to leave the political climate of Kano.
Whenever my late father analyses the NEPU and PRP his parties during the first and Second Republic he said among its characteristics there was hassada and rashin kunya against anyone who is successful, he further said when the factions emerged in P.R.P. Santsi (Imodu) took rashin kunya and Tabo took hassada da bakin ciki.
Most online political activists of today do not know and do not read our history they seat down in their comfort zones and write whatever they want to write without facts and figures mostly following their loyalty to political parties and political leaders, recently I saw somebody writing that Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi was a member of NEPU for the records Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi was never , ever a card carrying member of NEPU. In the first republic it was allowed for candidates to contest as independent candidates and that was what Rimi did but his friend Musa Said Abubakar Magami was a card carrying member of NEPU while my father Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila was a member of NEPU-Zaharhaqu (Student wing of NEPU). May their gentle souls rest in perfect peace.Amin
